In this case, though I needed to hear the words of this haiku as much as anyone else, only by creating this piece would I have let myself breathe it in.

Most often, it feels like the photos are given to me rather than taken by me. Sometimes they tap me on the shoulder and say “pick me!” I did, and joining the dance of words around the flame, I realized that like the darkness, I have been forever changed by friends, family, and chance encounters with strangers.

I don’t know what I’m going to do until I am deep in the heart of doing it, and even then I often can’t quite tell! When the moment comes that I know, I suddenly can’t conceive of when I didn’t. The Artists' Statement on the back of the card: I went on a walk and stumbled upon a stick. Picking it up, I wondered what it could mean. I dipped it into ink, rested it on paper, and it began to dance. As my mind struggled to keep up, the words easily fit into the choreography.

The Artists' statement from the back of the card: I went outside, picked up a stick, brought it inside and dipped it in ink. I did not know what to do. Once I placed my inky stick on the page, I crossed the threshold into beginner’s mind. From my very hand, the image swept onto the page in graceful pirouettes, and the words appeared like twinkling stars.
